I’m currently working on a media analysis proposal for my Topics in Gender and Communication/Media class that focuses on the #SpeakingOut movement in professional wrestling. This movement has become a powerful platform for survivors to speak out against systemic abuse within the industry, shedding light on the ways in which the media often silences women and protects those in power. Through social media, survivors have been able to challenge long-standing gender dynamics and bring attention to the toxic culture that has persisted for years. I’ll be utilizing frameworks like Feminist Ethics of Care, Intersectionality, and the Male Gaze to examine how these narratives are constructed and the implications they have for the wrestling community.
In my analysis, I aim to explore how the discourse surrounding #SpeakingOut reveals the underlying power structures that contribute to the marginalization of women in wrestling. By investigating language, narratives, and the portrayal of both survivors and the accused, I hope to highlight the impact of these conversations on broader societal views of gender and power. This proposal not only seeks to understand the movement’s significance but also to demonstrate how it is reshaping the narrative within the wrestling world and beyond, advocating for accountability and change.
